Download Ready: The ID.4 is Getting an Update
The Volkswagen ID.4 must be feeling a bit left out. This time last year, the electric SUV was the bell of the ball, a hot item on waiting lists nationwide. Fast forward to 2024, where the ID.4 is readily available, and all eyes are on a new sweetheart: the forthcoming ID.7. Â
No wonder it felt due for an update.Â
The 2024 ID.4 is getting several major, practical upgrades to both its power and technology. If it was your phone’s operating system, this would be considered the upgrade to the ID.4.2. Today, Volkswagen of Macon takes a deeper look at the EV’s imminent enhancements.Â
Power TripÂ
For starters, the diminutive SUV has called in a supersized reinforcement. A new rear motor dubbed APP550 employs a stator with more (and larger) square-section wires; a bigger heat sink; and an uprated oil- and water-cooling system. The result? The rear-wheel-drive models with the 77-kWh battery surge from 201 horsepower and 229 pound-feet of torque to 282 horsepower and 402 point-feet of torque. This makes the ID.4’s power-to-weight ratio comparable to the outgoing all-wheel-drive model. Â
Speaking of the all-wheel-drive models, the updated versions also receive a new rear motor, causing its own horsepower to jump from 295 to 335 and its torque to climb from 339 pound-feet to around 500. The new motors are also optimized for efficiency, which is reflected by its modest jump in EPA estimated range (from 275 to 291 miles for rear-wheel, 255 to 263 miles for all-wheel.)Â
The result is exhilarating performance, with a quiet and smooth powertrain amplifying the ID.4’s already-sound acceleration. If you still doubted the performance capabilities of electric vehicles, the ID.4 is here to shatter your preconceptions.Â
Are You Not Infotained?Â
Part of the modern SUV’s burden is keeping the entire family – complete with its dwindling attention spans – occupied for the duration of trips. Regarding its infotainment package, the ID.4’s offering is more comparable to the upcoming ID.7 than the 2023 ID.4. In fact, at 12.9 inches, the LCD infotainment screen is slightly larger than the ID.7’s.Â
The new infotainment screen now includes a permanent strip of HVAC controls displayed near the bottom edge. This streamlines activation for the air conditioning and seat heaters. Touch sliders for fan and temperature controls have been outfitted with new lights, granting generous nighttime illumination.Â
The infotainment system in full represents a huge leap for electric vehicles. The ID.4 is more cognizant of your charging concerns than ever before, and through its navigation apps, it’s able to locate charging stations at a specified level of charge. And by letting you program up to 10 charging waypoints throughout your trip, range anxiety will become a concern of the past.Â
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto remain available in addition to the ID.4’s native system. That system’s menus, as well as the steering wheel controls, have been simplified for peak interaction.
