Volkswagen’s EV Initiative is a Heavenly Endeavor
As Volkswagen continues its mission of supplying sustainable mobility, a powerful – if somewhat unexpected – new partner in the crusade against carbon emissions has emerged: the Pope.
That’s right – the Popemobile is going electric.
In recent years, the Vatican City State has committed itself to the implementation of sustainable solutions that help reduce mankind’s carbon footprint. To that end, they’ve established a program called “Ecological Conversion 2030,” which aims to replace existing vehicles in the state’s vehicle fleet with electric alternatives. The goal for this decarbonization strategy is an entirely climate-neutral fleet by the start of the new decade.
To reach this admirable goal, the Vatican has enlisted Volkswagen to help spearhead the transition process.
Super-ID.
Last week, Volkswagen personally delivered the first two electric vehicles of the transition to the Vatican: a pair of ID.3 Pro Performance models. All told, VW will deliver nearly 40 models from the fully electric ID. line, including the ID.3, ID.4, and ID.5.
Volkswagen will supply the Vatican fleet with ID. Models beginning in 2024, and will continue to replace the Vatican’s current vehicles with zero-emission alternatives until the fleet is completely replaced by electric vehicles in 2030.
In turn, the Vatican has agreed to build of network charging stations within its walls and properties in Rome, and employees will be allowed to use them as their private vehicles.
Back here in the states, Volkswagen of Macon is your home for the ID. family of electric vehicles, including the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Pro.

If all goes according to plan, the entire fleet of Vatican vehicles should be electric-only by 2030. But by that time, the Vatican’s commitment to decarbonization should look like the standard. With more charging stations popping up every day, electric vehicles are here to stay in the United States, Rome, and all over the world.
